Dragon Ride L’Etape Wales
The Dragon Ride is a fantastic sportive in Wales every June. There are 4 distances to choose from ranging from 100km to 305km. All routes include the Bwlch and Rhigos, 2 pretty amazing climbs. The longer routes also take in the aptly named Devil’s Staircase and Devil’s Elbow and have timed KOM stages. I have been the first female finisher on the 100km route for the last 2 years and have absolutely loved it. I’m feeling brave enough to tackle a longer route next year though.
Entries open in September each year for the following June and sell out every time. This year we were graced with the presence of Didi the Devil himself, was amazing to meet him and so cool to be cheered over the finishing line by him! He barely spoke any English so our conversation wasn’t the best but it was amusing.
The sportive has been run by the Tour de France people for the last couple of years and the organisation is great.
- Enter early to avoid disappointment.
- Be prepared to be blown around a bit on top of the climbs.
- Extra clothing for typical Welsh weather.
- Allow plenty of time to relax afterwards in the event village: the refuelling, comfy bean bags and big screen showing current bike races is great!
